Pénestin between beaches, nature and maritime traditions

At the southern tip of Morbihan, Pénestin charms with its wild coastline, golden cliffs and maritime soul, proud of its ancestral link with the sea and mussel farming.

Getting there

Cliffs 1000 reflections

Plage de la Mine d’Or, in Pénestin, captivates visitors with its cliffs of golden ochre with changing reflections. This exceptional hue comes from layers of sand and clay rich in iron oxides, compacted hundreds of thousands of years ago. A listed geological site that is unique in Europe, this beach offers an ideal setting for swimming and sunset strolls, thanks to its westerly aspect.

A truly fragile natural area, it invites you to discover it with respect. At low tide, the stretches of sand and geological curiosities are revealed. The beach also becomes a playground for fans of shore fishing. The Mine d’Or beach in Pénestin can be explored all year round, to the rhythm of the tides and the light!

Tréhiguier, mussel heart

The port of Tréhiguier, at the mouth of the Vilaine, is the historic centre ofmussel farming in Pénestin. In this lively setting, you can enjoy the peace and quiet and watch the flat-bottomed boats used by mussel farmers. Visitors can stroll along the quays, watch the fishermen at work and discover the freshly harvested seafood. The Maison de la Mytiliculture (Mussel Farming Centre), housed in the old lighthouse, recounts this passion for the sea and this know-how, recognised as a “Site Remarquable du Goût” (Outstanding Taste Site). All around, the peaceful countryside, dotted with sunken lanes and typical hamlets, completes this picturesque picture of the Breton coastline.
