Herbignac Medieval legends and the soul of Brie

Situated in the heart of the Brière Regional Nature Park, Herbignac is a place of scenic beauty, medieval heritage and traditional craftsmanship. A place where the authenticity of a lively village meets the rich history of the Presqu’île.

Getting there

A journey through time at the Château de Ranrouët

The Château de Ranrouët has watched over the commune since the 13th century. An impressive medieval vestige, it recounts the power of the lords of Assérac and the great hours of fortified Brittany. Surrounded by a moat, the site offers a captivating immersion in history. The towers, ramparts and moats bear witness to a time when salt and pottery made the region rich.

Listed as a Historic Monument, the castle now hosts guided tours, shows and events for young and old, in a lively, friendly atmosphere. In summer, its walls become the backdrop for originalcultural events: open-air theatre, concerts, night-time screenings and historical re-enactments transport visitors into an atmosphere steeped in history. The area around the site is also an invitation to take a stroll: a shady path leads down to the moat, while picnic areas are available for the whole family to enjoy.

Not far away, the village of Landieul embodies the gentleness of Herbignac. Its narrow streets lined with stone houses and its hedged farmland invite you to take a stroll. Here, time seems to stand still, between greenery, crafts and the local art of living.

Herbignac has beena major Breton pottery centre since Gallo-Roman times, and today is proof of this local know-how. Every spring, the greatest potters exhibit the fruits of their labour at the Potters’ Market, held in the grounds of the Château de Ranrouët.
