Explore the Vélocéan: 148 km of estuary, beaches, villages and emblematic landscapes of the Atlantic coastline.

The must-do cycling tour Atlantic coastline

The Vélocéan is one of the finest cycle routes for exploring Loire-Atlantique at the pace of the ocean. The 148km route runs from Saint-Nazaire to Pénestin along the Atlantic coast. Along the way, cyclists are treated to a variety of landscapes: a wild estuary, a redeveloped seafront, picturesque villages, the salt marshes of Guérande and iconic seaside resorts such as La Baule.

Accessible to families and touring enthusiasts alike, the route combines quiet roads, safe cycle paths and spectacular maritime vistas. The journey starts at the foot of the Saint-Nazaire bridge, passes through the Parc Paysager and the Bois Joalland lake, then continues towards the Guérande peninsula and the picturesque coastal villages.

a mosaic of discoveries

The Vélocéan crosses one of the most varied coastlines in Loire-Atlantique, offering a succession of breathtaking landscapes. From the Loire estuary and its unique panoramas, you reach the long family beaches of the Côte sauvage. Further north, the medieval town of Guérande and its salt marshes reveal an exceptional heritage, as does the Petite Cité de caractère (small town) of Le Croisic.

Along the way, the picturesque villages of La Turballe, Piriac-sur-Mer, Mesquer-Quimiac and Pénestin are a picture postcard in motion. Whether you’re on the road to admire the scenery, take photos, enjoy a gourmet break or discover something new, this itinerary offers as many opportunities to stop as it does to pedal, with every bend a new iodised atmosphere to savour.

pedal peace of mind

The Vélocéan is signposted in both directions, with clear signs bearing the route name and logo. Some sections remain in shared lanes or temporary facilities, which may require special attention, particularly if you are travelling with children. Most of the route is flat and pleasant from spring to autumn, making it easy to get along, while keeping an eye out for the occasional westerly wind.

The route has good transport links, thanks in particular to the TER Nantes – Saint-Nazaire – Le Croisic line. The route is dotted with a large number of Accueil Vélo-labelled accommodation establishments offering a range of useful services: secure parking, touring advice, repair equipment, etc. A real plus if you’re travelling along the coast with peace of mind.
