With the arrival of spring, it’s time to rediscover the simple pleasure of lunching al fresco, by the sea or under the pine trees. Whether you’re going as a family or a couple, La Baule-Presqu’île de Guérande is full of perfect spots to get out the tablecloth and enjoy a moment of relaxation in the fresh air. Here are four places where you can enjoy a picnic between ocean, forest and unspoilt nature…

1. Le Nau beach Le Pouliguen

The seaside atmosphere and holiday spirit are guaranteed at Plage du Nau, in the heart of Le Pouliguen. This family-friendly beach has the charm of a postcard: fine sand, a clear horizon and a few sailing boats in the distance. Bring your picnic basket, sit down facing the sea and enjoy the spectacle of the tides. The children play in the sand, while the grown-ups re-envision the world with a wisp of salty wind in their hair. And to make the day even longer, take a stroll along the harbour promenade to the famous Roche aux Mouettes.

2. Cale de la Vieille Roche Camoël

There’s a change of scene in Camoël, on the banks of the Vilaine. Here, nature sets the pace: the calm of the water, the reflections of the river and the discreet passage of the boats create a peaceful atmosphere. The cale de la Vieille Roche is a simple, authentic spot, perfect for getting out your chequered tablecloth and having a picnic in the shade of an oak tree. After your meal, take a stroll along the riverside path and make a diversion to the nearby Arzal dam. The place has that discreet charm of places that are still confidential.

3. Escoublac forest La Baule

Fancy a picnic under the pine trees? The Escoublac forest offers a soothing green setting, just a stone’s throw from the famous bay of La Baule. There are large clearings, perfect for spreading out your blanket and sheltering from the sun. The sound of birdsong, the smell of pine trees and the sand beneath your feet remind you that here, nature reigns supreme. After lunch, you can take to the forest paths or head for the bay of La Baule for a late afternoon with your feet in the water.

4. Kerhinet Saint-Lyphard

For a typically Brière country atmosphere, head for the village of Kerhinet in Saint-Lyphard. This hamlet of thatched cottages, in the heart of the Brière Regional Nature Park, is an idyllic setting for a picnic in the heart of nature. Take a seat in one of the shaded areas, surrounded by flowers and thatched roofs. In the afternoon, why not take a barge trip from the port of Bréca, or stroll through the heart of nature.
